Purpose
You may need to update a patient's demographic details at some point. This guide will show you how to update a patient's name or demographic details in Medicus from the patient's administrative record.
Navigating to the administrative record
There are two ways to navigate to the patient record within Medicus:
- Using the patient finder.
- By selecting a patient from the patient list, located in the Patient Administration module.
Once you select the patient you'd like to view through one of the methods outlined above, select Administrative Record from the left hand side navigation bar to be taken to the administrative record.
Name and demographics
Once in the patient's administrative record, you can update any field under the Name & Demographics section by simply selecting the one you want to edit. This will open a form for you to complete and save changes.
The only field you cannot update from this section is the patient's NHS number as this is a read only field within PDS.
Former name
There is also an option in the top right corner of the Name & Demographics section to add a patient's former name.
Here are some examples of situations where you may want to add a former name to a patient:
- A patient has recently married and changed their last name, therefore you may want to add their previous surname as a former name.
- A patient is transgender and has changed their official name, therefore you may want to add their previous name as a former name.
Preferred pronouns
Some patients may have a preferred pronoun. To help staff address patients using the correct pronoun, you can edit preferred pronoun within Medicus.
Once updated, this will appear in the patient banner so this information is clearly visible to a staff user to help them address the patient using their preferred pronouns.
PDS synchronisation tasks
Medicus will auto-update the patient's record based on any PDS changes to ensure the two are in syncronisation.
However, if one of the following fields are changed then a task is created to inform you of the change and take any action if required:
- Address
- Phone number
- Email Address
- DOB
- Gender
