Purpose
You may need to register a patient for Immediate Necessary Treatment, for example if they fall ill whilst away from home. This registration will be for a period of fourteen days. This guide will show you how to register a patient for Immediate Necessary Treatment in Medicus.
Creating a new INT registration
To register a new patient, navigate to the Patient Administration module from the modules menu in the left hand side navigation bar.
You'll then be taken to the patient list.
To register a new patient, select the New registration button in the top right hand corner of the page.
You'll be taken to a pop-out prompting you to select the registration type. Select Immediate Necessary Treatment.
NHS Personal Demographic Service (PDS)
Note: you must be logged in with your Smartcard to search for patients on the PDS.
To register a temporary patient, you are required to search for patient on the PDS.
There are two ways to search for a patient:
- Using their NHS number.
- By entering other details, including DOB and last name.
If you don't know a patient's NHS number there are four search type options:
- Default - Allows the use of "wildcards" e.g. Kat* instead of Kathryn or Katherine.
- Historic data - Same as the default search but uses patient previous names to try and return more records.
- Fuzzy name search - Uses techniques to find patients using a looser search criteria e.g. by checking common homophones such as Smith vs Smythe.
- Exact matches only - Only returns patients that match the search criteria exactly.
Select the 'Search' button once you've entered in the patient details to yield the search results.
The system will then search on the PDS to find a matching record.
Select the patient record to be taken to some additional information about the patient. Here, you can check that this is the correct patient you would like to register.
If a patient is not currently registered at the practice, there will be messaging displayed at the top of the form (see screenshot above), and you will be able to proceed with the registration.
If a patient already has an active registration, Medicus will alert you of this, and will be unable to proceed with the registration.
Once you've checked the patient details, click the 'Register patient' button.
Registration details
The INT patient registration will then be created and you'll be taken to the patient record.
If you view the registration details within the administrative record, you'll see that the registration type is for immediate necessary treatment, and that their registration end date is set to end automatically in fourteen days time.
Ending the registration
If you'd like to end the registration manually before the fourteen day period has ended, you can do this by selecting the End registration button.
You may want to do this if you'd like to convert the patient to a temporary or permanent patient as you'll need to end the current registration before beginning a new registration.
You'll be presented with a pop-out confirming that you'd like to end the registration. Select the 'Yes, end registration' button.
The patient will then be de-registered and will be inactive in Medicus.
