Purpose
If a patient should no longer have any issues of a prescription then you can end the prescription in Medicus to end the course. This action will most likely be for repeat prescriptions. This user guide will show you how to end a prescription in Medicus.
Navigating to the care record
There are two ways to navigate to the patient record within Medicus:
- Using the patient finder.
- By selecting a patient from the patient list, located in the Patient Administration module.
Once you select the patient you'd like to view through one of the methods outlined above, you'll be taken to the clinical care record.
Ending a prescription
To end a prescription in Medicus, select the prescription you would like to end from the patient record.
This will open up the View Prescription screen.
Scroll to the bottom and select 'End prescription' from the 'More actions' menu.
This will open up the 'End Prescription' form.
You're required to enter a reason from a dropdown list. This is to make sure you're recording if the patient has had a negative reaction to the medication.
If the patient has had a negative reaction to the medication, you'll need to choose 'Clinical contraindication' as the reason.
This will create an option to also submit a Yellow Card task to make sure any new reactions to medications are submitted to MHRA.
If you select another reason from the list then you won't have the option to submit a yellow card.
You can enter any additional information you think may be useful before selecting 'End Prescription'.
If the prescription was not issued via EPS then the prescription will simply end and future issues will be shown with a status as 'not issued'.
Handling cancellation request responses from EPS
If you're ending a prescription that has been issued via EPS, Medicus needs to retrieve these issues back from EPS.
Note: you'll need to be logged in with your NHS Smartcard to end prescriptions that were issued via EPS.
Once you've entered the discontinuation reason, Medicus will submit a cancellation request to EPS for each prescription issue.
If the prescription is successfully ended, the discontinuation reason is shown on the 'View Prescription' screen and the issues are displayed as 'not issued'.
Sometimes, EPS is not able to cancel the issue. For example, if the prescription is already with the dispenser then you will need to contact them directly. If the prescription is already with the patient, then you may have to contact the patient. Medicus will inform you of this if this is the case.
Complete EPS Cancellation Task
When requesting a cancellation of an EPS prescription, if the dispenser has already drawn the prescription from the Spine and therefore you need to contact the pharmacy, then Medicus will create a 'Complete EPS Cancellation' task to ensure the action isn't forgotten.
The task is under the 'Prescribing' section of the Workflow module and can be found under the task list of whoever actioned the original request.
Once you've followed the cancellation instructions on the task, select 'Mark as pharmacy contacted' to complete the task.
