Purpose
Patients taking repeat medications are able to request more when needed. Medicus enables patients to make a repeat prescription request via:
- The patient portal.
- The NHS App.
- A staff member can raise a repeat prescription request from the patient record on behalf of the patient.
This user guide shows you how to manage repeat prescription requests in Medicus.
Note: Only patients who are registered at the practice will be able to submit prescription requests.
Routine vs. non-routine requests
Repeat prescription request tasks will appear on your homepage if assigned to you or can be found in the workflow module, under prescription tasks.
The tasks are split into:
- Routine Requests - this includes repeat prescriptions which have issues left, for example a patient is requesting issue 4/6.
- Non-Routine Requests - this would be for any prescription which requires a re-authorisation e.g. a repeat prescription where the patient has already had all issues or a variable repeat.
Routine requests
Each routine prescription request looks like the below screenshot:
Simply review the medication in the task and select 'approve and issue' to proceed.
If there are more than one medication in the list you can approve or reject individual items.
Selecting 'reject' on an item will open up a 'reason' box where you'll be prompted to enter a rejection reason before proceeding.
Note: the rejection reason will not send to the patient in a communication so you'll need to inform the patient separately.
Routine prescription requests can be reviewed and approved in bulk.
To do this, select the 'bulk approve' button from the task list.
Non-routine requests
Non-routine requests cannot be approved in bulk as they require individual review and re-authorisation.
If a non-routine request contains more than one medication, you'll need to review and re-authorise these separately.
Note: if a patient requests both a routine and non-routine prescription request, all medications will come through as a non-routine request task (rather than splitting the task) so all medication requests can be reviewed at the same time by the same clinician.
Selecting 're-authorise' will open up the re-authorise prescription form for you to review and proceed.
