Purpose
Not all patients have an NHS number but still need to be registered at the GP practice. This user guide will show you how to register a patient without an NHS number.
Creating a new registration
To register a new patient, navigate to the 'Patient Administration' module from the modules menu in the left hand side navigation bar.
You'll then be taken to the patient list.
To register a new patient, select the 'New registration' button in the top right hand corner of the page.
You'll be taken to a pop-out prompting you to select the registration type. Select a registration type from the list.
Registering without an NHS Number
You are required to search for a patient on PDS first before being allowed to register a patient without an NHS number. This is to make sure there isn't a record on the PDS for the patient already.
Note: you must be logged in with your NHS Smartcard to search for a patient on the NHS.
Once the search yields no results, you'll an option to 'Register without NHS number'.
This will open up the 'Request GMS Permanent Registration' form where you an enter the patient details manually.
Note: the acceptance type can only be 'First acceptance' or 'Immigrant'.
Once you've completed the form select 'Complete & send to PCSE'.
The system will then:
- Create the new patient record
- Create the new permanent registration
- Send the NHAIS acceptance message
- Create the complete permanent registration task
However, no PDS link or request for GP2GP transfer will be created.
The patient will be issued a new NHS number and send it back to the practice once registration acceptance has been approved.
Note: until the patient has an NHS number you won't be able to send issue them prescriptions vis EPS for make an NHS e-Referral.
