Purpose
External clinical staff may require access to Medicus, for example, to view the health record of a patient within a community setting. It is the decision of the practice who they provide access to and what level of access individuals should be given. This user guide provides information on how someone with read-only access of Medicus can review the patient record.
Login & Account Management
You can login to Medicus on any device that runs a modern browser, including on a tablet or mobile. You can login to Medicus by heading to england.medicus.health on a modern browser that's connected to the internet.
Login and account management works in the same way for all users, including those with read-only access. Information about login and account management can be found within the following user guides:
- Activating your Medicus Account

There's a detailed user guide on using the patient finder here:
Finding Information on the Patient Record
Clinical Summary
The first page you'll be taken to on the patient care record is the clinical summary page. Here, you'll be able to see a snapshot of the patient's current care, including:
- Safeguarding risks, reasonable adjustments or medico legal flags on the patient banner.
- Current active problems (major and minor).
- Current allergies, repeat medications, acute medications prescribed in the last 12 months, medication prescribed elsewhere and over-the-counter medication.
- Last key observations added to the record.
- The last 3 months worth of consultations, documents and results.
- Upcoming future actions / recalls tracked at the GP practice.
- Links to the local Shared Care Record, Summary Care Record and GPConnect Record.
Consultation Notes
Consultation notes can be found in the journal, the second tab along on the care record. The journal is the full health record of the patient with the most recent entry first.
You can use the journal filters on the right hand side to filter by consultation notes so you can easily find what you're looking for.
Documents
Documents can be found in the journal, the second tab along on the care record. The journal is the full health record of the patient with the most recent entry first.
You can use the journal filters on the right hand side to filter by document so you can easily find what you're looking for.
You can select 'View Document' to review the document and any clinical coding added when the document was workflowed.
Medications
If you require a deeper dive on medications than the information available on the clinical summary page, then you can view the Medication Regimen tab on the care record.
From this page you'll be able to see detailed information on a patient's repeat medications such as remaining issues, when a medication was last issued and the EPS status for prescriptions. Clicking into each prescription will open the 'View Prescription' screen for your review.
For a more historical view on medications, you can also review the Medication History tab.
Investigation Results
Investigation results can be reviewed in two different ways on the patient record:
- By filtering by investigation results on the journal, similar to when you're looking for consultation notes or documents. This might be the preferred method if you're looking for one investigation report in particular.
- By navigating to the Results and Observations tab on the care record. This tab will provide you with a breakdown of all previous investigation results. This view is helpful if you're looking at what investigations the patient has had as a whole, and reviewing trends over time.
Administrative Information
If you want to review administrative information for a patient, you can navigate to the administrative section of the record from the left hand side navigation bar.
Support
For any technical support you can contact the Medicus help desk on support@medicus.health.
Any queries on local Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or system access should be agreed between the GP practice and the external providers who require their staff to have a read-only Medicus account.
